Spring

Friday the 13th, massive rain and hail storm in the garden. Luckily, my spring veggies held up like champs, and my summer seedlings were safe in the workshop.

And just as quickly as it came, it was gone. Saturday and Sunday were beautiful. I took advantage and gave my tomato, pepper and herb seedlings a sun bath.

And to my delight, I'll have bearded irises soon. They are all budding, even the ones I divided and planted on the other side of the yard outside my kitchen window. Most exciting is this new one I had ordered over a year ago. It had taken so long to get them, I forgot what I ordered. One of them is blooming this year, which is surprising. I thought it took a full season before irises bloomed. But soon, I'll have a surprise. Don't know what color it is. Can't wait to find out!

  1. Help!!!

I have both Brandywine and Beefmaster tomato seedlings growing. They're about a month old.
My Beefmasters are already working on their second set of true leaves while my Brandywine are still barely showing buds of the first set.

Is this normal for Brandywine? Or does it sound like something is wrong/needs to be changed?

  2. I don't think I'd worry about it. A month is early yet, and I find tomatoes tend to be slow starting then they take off like weeds. One thing I always do, though, is make sure I start more seeds than I need plants. That covers me in case some don't grow the way I'd planned, or they get damaged somehow. I usually give my spares away to friends or family. I have also had to run out to the nursery and buy starts because I didn't have faith in some seedlings for whatever reason. Though I later found that they would have been find if I'd had more patience, LOL

  3. Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it. And keep in mind, I don't post my failures often, but they are there! It seems every year something goes wrong and I can't explain it. This year, I had four bok choi plants that I sprouted from seed beautifully, planted them in the same spot where they thrived last year, at the same time of year even! This year, all of them bolted and were a total loss. I have no idea why. But it seems every year, the garden gives me just enough to make it worth my while to try again. I hope the same for you! Good luck!
