Spring Flower Lasagne

No, this isn't a recipe for dinner.  It's a recipe for a potted bouquet that will (hopefully) bloom gloriously come spring.

It started with this pot I'd emptied in the fall.  The rosemary that was in it grew too large for the space.  Unsure what to replace it with, I decided to try my hand at spring bulbs.

I'd bought the bulbs a few months ago, and the tulips and crocus' have been in my refrigerator to chill them down in preparation for planting (recommended when planting spring bulbs in my Zone 9).  The ranunculus, being corms, don't require it.

The planting instructions for tulips say to plant at a depth of 5".  So I filled my container with potting soil to about 6" below the top rim, then placed my tulip bulbs:

Cover that with about 3" of soil then place the crocus' and ranunculus corms:

Then top with another 2" of soil.  And now we wait.....

Around here, crocus' will bloom around February/March.  Mine were already beginning to sprout when I pulled them from the fridge.  The tulips should come up about a month later, as will the ranunculus.  I'm hoping the whole thing will last through May.  When that has all died off, my plan is to pull up the bulbs, store for next year and replace the pot with summer annuals.

That's the plan, at least.  Time will tell!

Stay tuned, as I will be coming back to show you how this turned out.
